| Union Cinema Co. Ltd (Union Cinemas Ltd from December 1936) was formed by David Bernhard in 1928 and had an ambitious expansion programme in the 1930s involving the takeover of local cinemas businesses with the aim of becoming sole operator in key towns up and down the country and to build new cinemas. In January 1936 they acquired Grand Theatre (Falmouth) Ltd from Harris Brothers thus control of the two cinemas in Falmouth, until Odeon spoiled the party that year by building a new cinema (Odeon were Unions chief rivals). Also that year they built the Ritz, Penzance. Union Cinemas Ltd soon got into financial difficalties and by the end of 1937 control was taken by Associated British Cinemas but continued to be run as a wholly owned company as Union Cinemas Ltd until the 1950s but without the Union name appearing on the cinemas or advertising. |
