Bude New Picture House
Christchurch Regent
Shipman and King Cinemas Ltd
Alfred R Shipman and Samuel S King were musicians for silent cinema before World War I.
In 1920 they created Shipman & King Ltd, their first cinema was at Horley, most of their
cinemas were in the South East of England.

In the late 1920s major expansion took place with several major builds.  After World War II
they returned to takeovers and in 1954 The
Bude Picture House Co. Ltd was sold to
Shipman and King.  It is said that they purchased the cinema as they liked to holiday in the
area and wanted one of their own cinemas to visit while on holiday!  The cinema was placed
on the market in the 1960s without a buyer being found.

The whole company was purchased by Lew Grade and Bernard Delfont and by 1969 the
circuit was growing again with the takeover of the Regent Christchurch and other holdings
of Portsmouth Town Cinemas who sold out to Grade.  Due to Grade's position on EMI
board S&K became part of EMI and when EMI took ABC become part of ABC.
