| Frederick George Drewitt ~ Cowell, Drewitt & Wheatly |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
| The architectural practice of Cowell, Drewitt & Wheatly was based in three towns, Newquay Penzance and Truro, each member of the practice running that towns office. They are best known for their work on churches and were still trading in 1972. Herbert Lee Cowell 1874-1930, Reginald Francis Wheatly 1879-1959 and Frederick George Drewitt 1877-1958. They were responsible for designing the Gaiety Newlyn(1921) and Royal St Ives(1938) beating off plans by George Coles no less. Drewitt was based in Penzance and it was most likely that he designed these two cinemas. Drewitt is often referred to as an early operator of cinemas in Penzance (the Savoy and Pavilion). However Drewitt designed the Pavilion(1912) as architect not operator and almost certainly was the architect in charge of the conversion of the building that become the Savoy.
