In 1922 Major A O Ellis  agreed to lease the Town Hall (1866 ~ Grade
II listed), Town Hall Place,  pay to convert it to a cinema and
renovate the building.  The cinema seated 260.  There is evidence
to suggest films were regularly shown here as early as World War I,
and for the most part was just known as "Cinema".

The sound system installed was British Acoustic and the cinema was
run by Mr L C Collings-Wells during the 1930s.  By 1939 Mid Devon
Cinemas Limited were operating the cinema along with
Moretonhampstead.  The cinema lasted until the end of the 1950s
under L J Copp, when it had a 23' proscenium and 21' screen.  The
cinema was on the main first floor, however there was a fire station
underneath so there may have been some disruption to film shows
if the alarm was raised, but perhaps it made this cinema the safest
in the country?
